Geographically,
Llanddewi Brefi is one of the largest parishes in Wales. It has a
history that can be traced to pre-Christian times. The Romans, Celts
and Normans have all left their mark here.
The village
itself would be all too easy to bypass, but it is worthy of a visit,
particularly if you like to walk. In 2003 a booklet featuring five
circular walks was published, and can be purchased from the village shop. Each
one of the walks demonstrate the variety and beauty of this area. The
starting point for all the walks is the village square, by the Church. |

Llanddewi Brefi
Parish Church is reputed to have been founded by David, Patron saint of
Wales.
Legend tells that
a synod was held here in 6AD. David was asked to address the
gathering, but could not be heard or seen by everyone. The ground rose
under his feet elevating him above the crowd. His voice was as a trumpet and
the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove came and stood on his shoulder.
The present church was built on the mound that tradition says sprang up that
day.
The central tower
dates from the end of the 12th Century. Many features within this
church bear witness to it having been an important centre for Christian
worship during the 7th-10th centuries. |
